Curated by Ralph Rugoff
Shoot the Family explores undercurrents of contemporary domestic life with artists’ portrayals of members of their own families. The artists use their relatives and partners as subjects, creating photographs and videos that are harrowingly intimate and question any pretense of objectivity between image-maker and subject.
Presenting approximately fifty works made in the past fifteen years by artists active in North America, Europe, and Asia, the exhibition examines contemporary definitions and notions of family. It reveals the complexity of those ideas that inevitably encompass broader historical, social, and economic considerations. The works of art offer multi-layered representations of the family as a dynamic and continually evolving social institution, drawing on practices inspired by documentary and staged photography, as well as conceptual art and performance art.
Shoot the Family is a traveling exhibition organized and circulated by [iCI (Independent Curators International)]>>>, New York and curated by Ralph Rugoff. The exhibition, tour, and publication are made possible, in part, by a grant from The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, with additional support from the iCI Exhibition Partners and the iCI independents.
