Finding the Public in the Contemporary Public

Lecturer, Graduate School of Design
Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
2016

This course examined a recent history of critical discourse about public space through a selection of readings and case studies to equip students with the knowledge and tools for addressing questions around the politics of public space. Class discussions, screenings, art, design, communication technologies, and exhibitions guided critical reflections on these topics.

Students became familiar with and proficient in a vocabulary for speaking about topics related to current arguments on public space within the context of art, architecture, visual culture, gender identity, and technology. They were offered a range of perspectives and models for evaluating and analyzing the politics of public space.

The course was part two of a term taught with architect Frida Escobedo.
